IF ANYONE COULD SOLVE the mystery of 2022, it would be Jean-Claude Berrouet. As technical director for Établissement Jean-Pierre Moueix for close to half a century, he oversaw the production of some of the most notable wines of St-Emilion and Pomerol, including Petrus. A slim man with a wry, mischievous smile, Berrouet was a legend long before he retired in 2007. As the winemaker for Jean-Pierre Moueix, Berrouet oversaw the expansion of the estate (my research suggests it grew from 17.4 to 28.4 acres). He helped raise Petrus to the very peak of the price pyramid in Bordeaux—a region where Left-Bank first-growth cabernet has long been the measure of greatness.
